EXHIBITION DESIGN

Exhibits. Booths. Stage shows. Seaweed.

A compilation of exhibitions, trade show booths and theatrical sets I designed while completing (and acing, I don’t mind saying) Pratt Institute’s Exhibiton Design certificate program.

Death, Sex, & Defense

Why does the ocean smell like the ocean?

By itself, saltwater has no scent. But the things that live in it certainly do. Rotting phytoplankton, seaweed sex pheromones and algae defense mechanisms – all mix together to give us the low tide iodine smell we associate with a serene ocean setting.

Art, education and architecture – or more specifically, cargo-tecture – combine to create an otherworldly deep dive into a microscopic world beneath the waves. Literally. The exhibit - housed in a set of shipping containers - will be accessible from the shore by a long pier. While the entrance will appear to float above the waterline, the main exhibit area will be submerged beneath the waves.

Once below the waves, guests will discover interactive scent sculptures that create an engaging and educational exhibit.

MIDO Eyewear Show

Tasked with designing a 20’x20’ booth for MIDO Eyewear Show.

As my eyewear brand I chose Crap Eyewear, for their love of surfing, beach-y vibes and eco-friendly products. With sunglasses built from bio-acetate, certified carbon neutral and a member of 1% for the Planet, this LA-based sun glasses company provides 100% protection from UV rays & bad vibes.

For the modest 20x20 footprint, I chose to lean into Crap’s colorful and cheeky personality with a touch of environmental consciousness. Crap’s bright and eye-catching glasses become fish on display in wall-mounted tanks. Guests can pick their favorites to try on out of the “touch tank”. Center-booth sits a huge 3-dimensional logo container, filled over the course of the trade show with collected recyclables at bins around the exhibition hall.

And all this sits below a wave sculpture built out of PET bottles and surfboards, calling back to Crap’s crest-riding roots.
